Stress Corrosion Cracking

Speaker: Tom Bubenik
Speaker Tom Bubenik

Course Overview:

This workshop provides an in-depth overview of high pH and near neutral pH stress corrosion cracking (SCC).  Topics covered include history and characteristics of SCC, causative and non-causative factors related to SCC, coating effects, SCC direct assessment, susceptibility assessments/site selection, field inspection protocols, mitigation, and the CEPA guidelines.

Course Topics:

  • Pipeline Coatings
  • Stress and Strain
  • SCC DA
  • Site Selection
  • Field Inspection Protocol
  • Mitigation

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Recognize the three factors necessary for SCC to occur on transmission pipelines
  • Be aware of the difference between high pH SCC and near neutral pH SCC
  • Understand the role coatings play
  • Identify sources of stress that can lead to SCC and understand importance of cyclic stresses on initiation and growth of SCC
  • Be familiar with the steps involved in SCC direct assessment programs
  • Be aware of mitigation methods for SCC

Course Fees (In USD):
ASME Member $850
Non-ASME Member $950
(Fees include Professional Course Guide, Breakfast and Lunch)

Course Attendees:

This course is intended for engineers interesting in learning more about SCC and about conducting SCC integrity assessments.  Prerequisites are 2 to 4 years of experience related to pipeline integrity management and/or involvement in SCC direct assessment programs.  Some prior exposure to high pH or near neutral pH SCC is desired.
